Spotlight on USS Bring Your Child to Work Day

From Daniel Summerfield, Co-Head -Responsible Investment at USS Investment Management

Why did you want to run a Bring Your Child to Work Day?

Our employees have benefited greatly from the seminars that Employees Matter have been running at USS Investment Management for the past year, and we wanted to go further in supporting our employees. By engaging our workforce and laying on something of benefit for their children USS, our employees and their children would all profit from a rewarding programme.

How was the day run?

We had over 50 children in attendance on the day. The Employees Matter leaders split the children into two rooms with the 4-6 years old in one room and the 7-12 years olds in another. The 4-6 year olds had a theme of ‘work’ for the whole day and looked at different jobs that people do. As it was in the run up to Christmas they also prepared an arts and crafts session.

In the older 7-12 year group, the leaders had created a theme for the children that reflected our organisation and the group had the task of setting up their own children’s pension fund with fascinating results.  From designing a logo and brand to writing recruitment adverts, forming their own teams and designing free gifts it was a fun packed and full day. The trained leaders were very organised and professional and they really knew how to engage with the children of all ages.

What feedback did you get from your staff?

We had overwhelmingly positive feedback. Employees were delighted that their children now had a feeling for what their parents did at work and why they came to work. They were proud to see their children learning about business and having a good time.

What benefit do you think there was for your staff?

It gave employees a positive view of the organisation in that the event was professionally produced and managed but it had a purpose too. Yes, there was lots of fun including Santa in his grotto but the main benefit was a new level of understanding of what goes on in the workplace.

Would you recommend other companies to run a similar day?

Definitely. The overall benefit was positive for the children too which made them positive towards their parent’s employer and we have already set the date for our next one which will be held in our Liverpool offices.
